nourishing lip balm

The change of seasons, especially from Summer to Autumn seems to have a big effect on many of us. You may notice your skin, hair & lips seem very dry over this period. I have not long come back from 6 weeks in Central America where it was so hot every day with extremely high humidity, I am now home to cold weather & a lot of wind, my body is having trouble with the adjustment. I have made a nourishing and healing lip balm and would love to share the recipe with you! This recipe was made for a cold sore which has popped up, however this balm is perfect for keeping your lips nourished and healthy, all year round.

I am not a qualified aromatherapist or practitioner, this is simply a recipe that works for me and one I am willing to put on my body 🙂

2 tbsp. Beeswax
1 tbsp. Cacao Butter (or Shea Butter)
7 tbsp. Oil (less if using Shea Butter) – I used:
* 3 tbsp. Hemp Oil – for everything, always! Amazing for your skin
* 2 tbsp. Coconut Oil (1x MCT 1x Standard Coconut Oil) do not use if sensitive to coconut!
* 1 tbsp. Tamanu Oil – heals many skin conditions, heals cold sores & helps prevent them from occurring, nourishes cracked/dry lips
* 1 tbsp. Camellia Oil – helps to smooth and nourish lips
15 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil – antiviral, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory
20 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil – antiviral
10 drops of Eucalyptus Oil – anti-inflammatory, soothing
2 capsules Vitamin E Oil – soothes skin & helps to relieve discomfort, repairs skin and reduces inflammation

Create a double boiler- I add small amount of water to a medium size saucepan on a medium heat and top with a stainless steel bowl. You could put a glass/stainless bowl in an electric pan half filled with water. However you are able to melt the ingredients safely, ideally without using plastic or a microwave.

Add Beeswax, Cacao Butter and Oil to a heatproof bowl over a medium heat until they have melted. With a spoon, remove a small amount of the liquid and allow it to set, you can then test the texture of your lip balm. If the balm is too soft, you can add more cacao butter, if it is too hard, try adding some more oil. I like my balm quite firm, it melts easily once applied to your lips.

Once you have the texture you desire, add in your Essential Oils, and break in 2 capsules of Vitamin E Oil. Mix together.

Pour mixture into clean jars or containers, and allow to set.

There are many essential oils which are great for healing cold sores; Lemon Balm, Oregano Oil, Clove, Chamomile, Thyme, the list goes on. Use what you have available and be sure to use good quality brands!

Supplementing with L-Lysine, Vitamin C, Zinc & Vitamin E can speed up the healing process
